How to Predator-Proof Your Chicken Coop: A Practical Checklist
Most flock losses are not bad luck. They are a weak point that a predator found first. Raccoons, foxes, weasels and hawks all probe coops the same way: they look for the one opening, gap or latch that gives. This checklist covers the weak points we see most often, roughly in order of impact.
1. The door that stays open too long
The highest-risk window is dusk. Hens are inside, the door is still open, and you are still at dinner. Foxes and raccoons learn feeding and closing routines faster than most keepers expect. Fix it with discipline (close at sunset, every single day) or remove the human factor with an automatic door on a timer.
2. Chicken wire where hardware cloth should be
Chicken wire keeps chickens in. It does not keep predators out: raccoons reach through it and weasels pass through anything wider than an inch. Use half-inch hardware cloth on every opening, including windows and vents, and fasten it with screws and washers, not staples.
3. The unprotected perimeter
Foxes and dogs dig. A predator apron, hardware cloth laid flat around the coop and run perimeter, extending 12 or more inches outward, stops digging predators without trenching. Pin it down and let grass grow through it.
4. Simple latches
Raccoons open simple hook latches, sliding bolts and even some carabiners. Use two-step latches or padlock-style closures on every door a raccoon can reach, including nest box lids.
5. Food that invites guests
Open feed attracts rats, and rats attract everything that eats rats. Store feed in metal bins and consider a treadle feeder that closes between visits.
The 10-minute audit
Walk your coop once with a flashlight after dark: look for gaps wider than half an inch, test every latch with a firm shake, check where wire meets wood, and watch where the light shines through. Whatever you find is what a raccoon finds tonight.
The single highest-impact upgrade for most keepers is taking the evening close-up off human memory. That is exactly what our automatic coop door with timer does.
